Thinking of retiring in Murphy but you aren’t sure of what you will do.
You probably know that the mountains are filled with various recreational activities; boating, fishing, hunting and hiking to name a few. But maybe you were thinking of a hobby that produces a bit of income. No, I’m not talking about the casino, which may or may not produce income. In fact, if I were to bet on the outcome of anyone consistently making money at the casino, I would favor the house. I digress. No, what I am referring to is gold and gem panning.
It is well known that Western Carolina has yielded gold in the rivers for years. I’m not saying you will find a 3 lb chunk of gold, but it is out there. A friend of ours pans for gold in the Valley River and consistently is successful. It might only be a spec worth $10 but he has found a chunk large enough for making a necklace.
Throughout the area you will see signs for panning for gems. These too yield small ruby’s, quartz and sapphires.
Whether panning for gold or gems, keep in mind the panning is usually conducted in running streams and the mountain water is cold. Some really big gold finds are being made with metal detectors. A detector will allow you to scan in seconds an amount of material that it would take you an hour to process in a dry washer.
Gold panning, sluicing for gold nuggets, dredging for gold are all different ways to look for gold. You can also go to places that are already set up to help you with your endeavors. Here are a couple of local places for you to consider. Good luck!
