Murphy is a great place to retire if you are looking for a rural and quiet environment. Murphy is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, with several lakes nearby. The town itself is quite small with many antique stores and restaurants located downtown. Just outside of town is Harrah’s Valley River Casino.
Murphy doesn’t have any malls, but you can get to a mall in just over an hour in Chattanooga, Asheville and the outskirts of Atlanta.
The nearby lakes and rivers offer fishing, boating, skiing and spectacular sights with the mountains as the back drop.
For the hiking enthusiast, the mountains offer unlimited trails for beginners to advanced. We have two whitewater rafting areas within 30 minutes.
For those of us not able to enjoy the mountain hikes, we sit on our decks with views of the mountains and watch the next weather front come over the hill. Cocktails optional.
The weather in Murphy is moderate. There will be a few really cold days, a day or two with snow, which is usually off the roads by noon, a few hot days, 50 inches of rain per year and the summer humidity is tolerable.
Depending on where you are from, traffic in Murphy is light. The downtown traffic at the end of the day will clear out in 5 minutes. Rarely do you have to wait through multiple signal light changes to make your turn.
We are a hometown that has parades at Christmas and 4th of July. There is a park right outside of downtown which offers walking trails (and is dog friendly), baseball fields and picnic areas with bathrooms. There are many wineries and breweries within driving distance. We also have the John C. Campbell Folk School where you can learn a new hobby and enjoy their festivals.
So the real questions is, why not retire in Murphy?
